Instruct thì trang trọng hơn (more formal) và thường được sử dụng trong những tình huống trịnh trọng (official situations): Patients were instructed to follow the diet exactly (Các bệnh nhân được hướng dẫn tuân thủ chính xác chế độ ăn kiêng).

Order có ý nhấn mạnh hơn và nó được sử dụng khi người nói ở một vị trí quyền lực cao hơn hoặc muốn bạn phải vâng lời: A police officer ordered me to get out of the car (Viên cảnh sát yêu cầu tôi bước ra khỏi xe).

Command chủ yếu được dùng trong quân sự (military situations).

1. Prim and pro: đứng đắn. Vd: She’s very prim and pro about everything. Make sure you don’t use any swear word round her.

2. Length and breadth: suy nghĩ một chút nhé, length là chiều dài, breadth là chiều ngang, như vậy, length and breadth nghĩa là mọi nơi, mọi chỗ (dọc ngang trời đất í mà). Vd: You can find quality beers throughout the length and breadth of Ireland.

3. By and large: hầu như, gần như (khoảng 90%). Vd: She believes that, by and large, there is nothing we can do to change anything.

4. Hard and fast: nghiêm khắc (="strict)." Vd: I’m afraid these rules are hard and fast. We can’t make any exception.

5. Down and out: từ này gần giống với boxing vậy đó. Bị “bụp” một cú ngã sóng xoài, sau đó thua luôn. Như vậy, down and out có nghĩa là phá sản, đau khổ...Vd: I’m afraid that John is down and out..

6. Safe and sound: an toàn và nhanh chóng. Vd: Their parents were relieved when they arrived safe and sound from their hiking trip.

7. To and fro: đi đi lại lại. Vd: I’ve been running to and fro all day long. I’m exhausted.

8. Pros and cons: mặt tốt và xấu, hai mặt trái ngược nhau. Vd: You need to consider the pros and cons before you make a decision.

9. Cup of tea: cụm từ này khá quen thuộc với người Anh, mang nghĩa là vật, đồ, thứ yêu thích (vì người Anh rất thích uống trà). Vd: I know it is not your cup of tea but you’ve done really well.
